By their nature, coworkers are \u201ctrapped\u201d in a face-to-face, interdependent situation which they cannot leave. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Some absolute essentials for workers: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u2022 learning to work out their interpersonal conflicts<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u2022 having a successful model for making and implementing group decisions<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u2022 having a model for creative, innovative thinking and problem solving and for<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>communication between themselves and their clients. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u2022 For co-workers: the ability to work in teams, tolerate their diversity, and make<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>the most of their \u201cdiffering gifts.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Businesses cannot afford the constant turnover and need for retraining that comes from irresolvable conflicts.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: red;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The model I developed for Focusing Communities, articulated in the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Focusing in Community <\/em>manual (1981, 2007), included all of these things: not just Focusing Alone for creative problem solving, but also Focusing Partnerships in the context of Focusing Groups or Teams, Interpersonal Focusing for resolving conflicts, and Collaborative Focusing-Oriented Decision Making for task-oriented groups. Here was a \u201cpackage\u201d of skills and methods that could be brought into businesses and organizations. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">At about this time, I gathered up some books at a kiosk at the Northwest Regional Airport near Bentonville, Arkansas &#8212; home of mega-business giant WalMart.
